Sommaire
After being away for twenty years, Joel Arsenault comes back to Acadie, where he was born and raised, to be with his dying mother. In his efforts to make peace with her, he looks back over his life. In Acadie, in the early 1980s, residants who had been expropriated from Kouchibouac National Park made their last attempt to take action against those responsible for what many have called "the second Acadian deportation". Joel, a young social sciences graduate, and his mother Mérilda, a political activist, lost the battle they had been fighting alongside those who were expropriated. Fiery Mérilda blamed the defeat on the fact that too many people, including her son, had abandoned the fight too early. Joel, who felt as though he were no longer the man for the job, having lost the esteem of the former residants as well as his mother, opted to join an international cooperation program to heal his wounds. In Africa, he met a Malian healer, Djénéba; his life there has enabled him to recover his energy and his commitment to community action. Since Mérilda has never accepted the defeat of Kouchibouguac, nor the fact that Joel has left Acadie, will a reconciliation of mother and son be possible.
