In this stark drama, Max Von Sydow plays Andreas, a loner who, despite himself, becomes involved with three of his island neighbors: a Machiavellian architect, his formless wife and the beautiful widow Anna (Liv Ullmann), a moralist who sustains herself with illusion. One of Bergman's first films to be photographed in color.
Andreas vit simplement sur une île isolée jusqu'à ce qu'il rencontre par hasard Anna, une jolie et mystérieuse veuve ainsi que ses amis, un couple "libéré", Elis et Eva Vergerus. Ce quatuor aux problèmes existentiels universels va nouer une étrange relation de couple à couple, qui va les mener à réfléchir sur leurs conditions et principes de vie respectifs.
