Set in rural Quebec, The Call of the Whippoorwill traces the growth of Gabrielle Déchênes, both as woman coming into her own fullness of life and as daughter of a proud and jealous father. Godfrey Deschênes sees Gabrielle's American lover, the engineer CrowninShield, as a threat not only to the unity of his family and their fortunes, but to the very fabric of Quebec life. On the eve of his departure, Crowninshield comes to Godfrey, the political boss of the county, to tell him the mill has decided not to expand in the direction of the Déchênes farm and to ask for Gabrielle's hand in marriage. The powerful climax of the play is reached as inner emotions are revealed and Gabrielle is forced to make an inevitably tragic choice.
