A picture of life of the Russian gentry in the late 19th century. A village teacher, undergoing an existential crisis and believing that his life has no meaning, torments both himself and his young wife. A doctor hates his patients and his work. Guests staying at the house of the wife of a deceased general are talking about the pleasures of a simple village life, not really believing what they are saying.
Un portrait de la vie de la noblesse russe à la fin du 19ème siècle. Un instituteur de village, qui traverse une crise existentielle et croit que sa vie n'a pas de sens, se lamente et tourmente sa jeune épouse. Un médecin déteste ses patients et son travail. Les invités séjournant chez la femme d'un général décédé discutent des plaisirs d'une vie simple au village, ne croyant pas vraiment ce qu'ils disent.
