Sommaire
1937, in Spain the Civil War is still raging. The town of Guernica is destroyed by bombs. The Japanse invade China, thousands of civilians are killed. There are strikes in the USA. Strikes are forbidden in Nazi Germany. Criticism of the regime is not tolerated. "Official" art, as shown to the public in the "House of German Art", which is opened in Munich in 1937, can only take a positive view of the dictatorial system. At the same time, another exhibition is on show in Munich: "Degenerate Art". It contains works by many internationally recognized artists, whose paintings and sculptures are condemned by the National Socialists as representing a "deliberate attack on the ideals of the Germanic race". The subject of this film is the tyrannization of art by power. It includes historical footage of the original exhibition and reports on a reconstruction thas was undertaken and shown in the County Museum of Art in Los Angeles in 1991 and in Berlin in 1992.
