Sommaire
Achim Freyer, professor of stage design at the West Berlin College of Arts, is a selftaught painter. In East Germany he majored in graphic design and for a short time studied at the Bertolt Brecht Theater. As a painter he radically rejected state-or-dained Socialist optimism, and thus had no chance to achieve public recognition. His theatre activities brought him together with Ruth Berghaus, Benno Besson and Adolf Dresen.
In conflict with East Berlin's Deutsches Theater, Freyer took advantage of a guest concert in 1972 to remain in West Germany. Since then he has been designing his imaginative stage settings, directing operas and plays in the West. Two of his houtstanding achievements were his staging of the Philipp Glass opera "Satygraha" in Stuttgart in 1981, and "Eshnaton" in 1984. At Vienna's Burg Theater Freyer collaborated with composer Dieter Schnebel and dramatist Urs Troller in the staging of Ovid's "Metamorphoses". The result was a fantastic vision: a collage of light , colour, sound, speech, motion, space and figures.
