Sommaire
The only female mathematician, philosopher and astronomer of Antiquity, Hypatia (370-415) was also the only woman to direct the School of Alexandria and its famous Library with four hundred thousand manuscripts. Her death and the burning of the Library plunged the Western world into the Great Darkness from which it did not emerge until more than a thousand years later. I wanted to know more about her. In vain. Men, mostly men in cassocks, had erased all traces of his existence. But they had canonized Cyril, the Patriarch of Alexandria, his avowed enemy and murderer.
